A shloka (शलोक) (also spelt sloka)(सलोक) is a form of hindu prayer, verse, phrase, proverb or hymn of praise, usually composed in a specified meter. The most common form is a verse of two lines, each of sixteen syllables. Shlokas are the primary verse form of the Sanskrit epics, Mahabharata and Ramayana.Shloka forms the part of ''Stotras'' which are dedicated to Gods as prayers. Sanskrit Shlokas describe God in different forms and their celestial powers. People, who sincerely recite these verses and invoke the God mentally, attain a steady and peaceful mind.
Among the greatest of all services that can be rendered by men to Almighty God, is the education and training of children, so that they can foster by grace in the way of salvation, growing like pearls of divine bounty in the shell of education and will be one day the jewel in the crown of abiding glory. Such a service- minded person is Smt. G. Annapoorni Ramasubramanian-a born teacher, a social entity and a great motivator to her students. She is a well- learned Sanskrit guru and imparts her knowledge efficiently to people of all ages. She has been in service for the past 15 years and is been imparting spiritual knowledge in the age groups 3- 60yrs.
Smt. Annapoorni understands the need of every child for material education, education for becoming good human beings and for divine education so that they can face the realities of life in the new millennium. After the loving lap of a mother, and safe surroundings of a family for maybe 3 years, a child feels at home under the devoted care of Smt. Annapoorni. She opens the world to them, and let them explore it their way and stays beside them as a guide (guru). She is a second mother to every child that learns here.
Smt. Annapoorni started initially with just one student and slowly grew it to a big number. She worked with Kalyani Natya Kalalaya, an institution for fine arts. She worked there for 6 years where her students performed once a year at Mahodaya Hall, Ashok Nagar. Then, she began taking Sloka classes at home. Students of varied origins study from her and she treats every individual in the same way as the others. She extended her class hours according to the requirements of her students. Presently, she teaches about 80 children in the age groups of 2.5yrs to 12 yrs and to about 30+ people in the age groups 20 and above.
It is rightly said that learning starts at home. In Smt. Annapoorni's case too, her father Late Sri K.Y. Ganapathy and her mother Smt. A.S.Meenakshy, have taught her the sanskrit slokas right from her childhood days. She learnt the Bhashyam of the Slokas from her maternal uncle Sri. A.S.Padmanabhan.Apart from taking Sanskrit Sloka classes at home, Smt. Annapoorni teaches Sanskrit Slokas to children across the country via the internet. Also she takes Sanskrit tuitions for school children of classes 4 to 10. Apart from teaching, she chants Narayaneeyam along with a big group of people from all over the country, everyday via the internet.
Smt. Annapoorni wins the hearts of her students with the love she showers on them. She is a blessing for all her disciples. She is also a role model for many because of her patience with the children and the way she handles them.
For the past 3 years her students have been regularly performing at various temples, upanayanams, religious gatherings on account of Indian festivals, etc. Of these, the latest ones include, Dussera Celebrations'09 at Sri.Vishweshwara Sasthrigal's mandali, K.K.Nagar, Sri Mariamman Temple, Nesapakkam and Sri Krishnan Temple, Thiru Nagar, Valasarawakkam, Chennai. In near future, programmes are scheduled to be held at Tirupathi, PSBB Schools during Rama Navami Celebrations, and many more.
